NEW WHITE PAPER FOR SAP CUSTOMERS HIGHLIGHTS KEY BUSINESS DRIVERS AND BENEFITS OF APPLYING VOICE TECHNOLOGY IN THE DISTRIBUTION CENTER/WAREHOUSE

PITTSBURGH (Feb. 24) – A new white paper released by Tompkins Associates, a leading global supply chain consulting firm, highlights the compelling benefits that are continuing to drive the growth of voice technology at SAP customer organizations. These benefits include accuracy, productivity, visibility and control of core warehousing functions.

Authored by Tom Singer, principal at Tompkins Associates, the paper, “Voice-Enabling Your SAP Warehouse: Building the Business Case for Voice Technology,” examines the primary drivers of the increasing role of voice in distribution center (DC)/warehouse applications and reviews key areas of consideration in evaluating the need for voice against other technologies.

“As more DCs and warehouses have realized the advantages of voice, it has become more popular,” says Singer. “But the technology’s popularity should not win out over ensuring that you are making the right decision for your operation. What it boils down to is selecting the right tool for the job. In many cases, voice-centric solutions are an extremely effective technology for improving productivity and performance in SAP enterprise organizations,” he said.

The white paper recommends that SAP organizations conduct an in-depth evaluation and build a solid business case for implementation, including a thorough understanding of the operational situation, the added value new processes can offer, and the associated costs. When quantifying the benefits, companies need to understand the engineer-based analysis.

While the multitude of case studies and proof points provide a good general indication of the value of voice technology, the paper recommends that these reports must be considered in the context of before and after points, as well as the nature of the operation, product being handled, and the systems involved. Ultimately, determining how voice could be best applied within an organization is dependent on a variety of underlying factors which can vary across operations and applications.

“As SAP users continue to focus on improving their logistics and fulfilment processes, voice technology will increasingly play an important role in driving bottom-line results within their distribution operations,” said Thomas H. Murray, vice president of Product Management and Marketing at Vocollect, Inc., the world leader in voice solutions for mobile workers. “Voice-centric solutions help them decrease transaction costs, improve overall operating efficiency, and increase individual worker accountability and visibility to help manage a mobile workforce,” he said.

PITTSBURGH (Dec. 16) – Vocollect, Inc., the world leader in voice solutions for mobile workers, has validated a strong performance of Vocollect Voice over the past year at the parts center of IHI Construction Machinery Limited (IHI), a leading Japanese manufacturing company. The company has achieved a 70 percent reduction in work errors from its one-year implementation of Vocollect Voice, helping the company attain a 99.993 percent operating accuracy.PITTSBURGH (Dec. 16) – Vocollect, Inc., the world leader in voice solutions for mobile workers, has validated a strong performance of Vocollect Voice over the past year at the parts center of IHI Construction Machinery Limited (IHI), a leading Japanese manufacturing company. The company has achieved a 70 percent reduction in work errors from its one-year implementation of Vocollect Voice, helping the company attain a 99.993 percent operating accuracy.

IHI, which manufactures and markets large-scale construction equipment including mini-excavators, hydraulic shovels and cranes, and associated environment-related equipment, is engaged in parts control of approximately 60,000 items of varying sizes at its parts center in Yokohama. The deployment began in June 2008, applying Vocollect Voice over a period of months for cycle-counting, receiving inspection, storage, picking and shipping inspection.

The key goals for the deployment were work standardization, the simplification of work processes, and overall productivity enhancement by improving operational efficiencies. In addition to the dramatic 70 percent improvement in accuracy, the company realized a 46 percent average improvement in productivity, reducing the number of workers per shift by 50 percent.

Before introducing the voice solution, the IHI parts control center used hand-held terminals or paper labels for tasks such as receiving, shipping, picking and cycle-counting. Jobs using paper labels were prone to mistakes, while productivity was hampered when using hand-held terminals during inventory count and put-away. In addition, since data transfers were batch-processed, there was no way to monitor work progress in real time.

The project commenced in June 2008 and the Vocollect Voice system was deployed in a phased implementation. The system enabled not only real-time progress controls and data updates over voice, but also on-site access to the information stored in the enterprise system. As a result of the voice system, the use of paper instruction slips and the input to hand-held terminals has been eliminated, significantly improving overall work efficiencies. Further, in this eyes-free and hands-free environment, the higher safety of workers has helped to dramatically improve concentration, productivity and operational accuracy.

Satoru Hanazono, manager, Information Systems Group, corporate administration office at IHI said, “Real-time control of work processes has been enabled through Vocollect Voice without having to replace our existing ERP system. The effect of these improvements in work efficiencies from voice is so great that I anticipate additional future benefits.” IHI is now studying the potential of using Vocollect Voice for other applications, including picking on the product manufacturing floor and PDA input control of the inspection results of finished products in the inspection process.

ZETES PUTS VOICE INTO ARGOS STORES

LONDON AND PITTSBURGH (Dec. 10) – Zetes, Europe’s leading provider of value-added solutions and systems integration based on the automatic identification of goods and people, announces it has implemented a voice-directed put-away solution within 130 Argos stores, to enhance operational efficiency in the “back-of-store” area.

This is the first time any European retailer has used voice in-store as a quick and easy way to speed up the put-away process and operate a more flexible, customer-driven stockroom. Since introducing the voice solution, Argos has seen significant process improvements through reduced time to the final sale point. “Previously stores needed to put away products within each cage and then release the products for sale. Now individual items are released for sale as soon as they are put away – ‘on shelf’ literally means ‘on sale,’” said Alan Jeffries, head of store operations at Argos.

Argos began working with Zetes on a proof of concept pilot to validate the business case for the initiative in 25 of its stores, which took place during the peak trading period of 2008. Following this, Zetes was awarded the first phase of the integration contract and was subsequently successful in achieving the project objectives within half the original time forecast – a rate of 15 stores going live each week. As a result of this performance level, Zetes has been appointed to lead a company-wide roll-out to all of Argos’ 740 stores.

Depending on their size, Argos stores can receive up to two daily deliveries. The company is using voice technology to notify delivery assistants of where to store each product in their “back-of-store” warehouse. Working in this innovative way has been proven to improve Argos’ put-away process efficiency by up to 24 percent. Voice technology also has enabled Argos to introduce line positioning in the stockroom, allowing complete flexibility over the layout with the fastest-selling products to be stored closest to the customer collection points. The technology also means smaller stores have the ability to stock a greater variety of products because items can be shelved anywhere and easily retrieved without the need for delivery assistants to have detailed stockroom knowledge.

The in-store voice solution being rolled out by Zetes for use by the delivery assistants will comprise Zetes’ 3iV application software and supporting management tools, Vocollect Talkman T5 computers, VoiceClient, and VoiceConsole software. Comprehensive support and maintenance is being provided by Zetes as part of the Zetes Care solution.

Zetes is Europe’s largest integrator of voice solutions. The company has now completed over 800 voice implementations, which equates to over 60 percent of all live projects, supporting an installed base of over 45,000 users. Today, more than 250,000 distribution center workers worldwide depend on Vocollect Voice technology.

Zetes won the Argos contract because it offered a completely open, hardware-agnostic and flexible solution configuration, combining both dedicated voice and voice-assisted working options. In addition, Zetes was able to offer the benefits of tight integration with both Argos’ existing in-store system and its business intelligence repository, coupled with full onsite hardware and software maintenance.

“We selected Zetes for this project because we wanted a supplier which had a proven track record with voice technology and whose software application would give us the flexibility of an open approach, which did not commit us to a specific hardware vendor,” said Nick Skilbeck, programme manager at Argos. “In Zetes we believe we have a supplier able to future-proof our investments and provide ongoing access to all the latest application and technology developments in the wireless and supply chain arenas.”

Gary Glessner, EMEA VP and managing director for Vocollect, Inc., said, “Zetes and Vocollect, working in partnership, will be supplying Argos with the very latest in voice technology applied to the in-store environment, a significant new growth area for voice applications. The solution will help Argos achieve improvements in efficiency and accuracy that fundamentally affect their bottom line, helping them to gain competitive advantage.”

James Hannay, senior VP for Northern Europe at Zetes said, “The voice put-away solution means Argos can be more agile, both in terms of designing the stockroom layout around the fastest moving product lines and also in the way they can manage their resourcing requirements. Staff will be easier to train and recruitment can be more flexible, because the delivery assistants need to have less prior knowledge.”

PITTSBURGH (Dec. 1) – O’Reilly Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ:ORLY), one of the largest specialty retailers of automotive aftermarket parts, tools, supplies, equipment and accessories in the United States, today announced that it is accelerating its transition to a paperless distribution center (DC) network by greatly expanding its use of voice systems from Vocollect, Inc., the world leader in voice solutions for mobile workers.PITTSBURGH (Dec. 1) – O’Reilly Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ:ORLY), one of the largest specialty retailers of automotive aftermarket parts, tools, supplies, equipment and accessories in the United States, today announced that it is accelerating its transition to a paperless distribution center (DC) network by greatly expanding its use of voice systems from Vocollect, Inc., the world leader in voice solutions for mobile workers.

O’Reilly has 3,415 stores in 38 states and more than 44,000 team members. Through its acquisition last year of CSK Auto Corporation, as well as the establishment of additional new DCs to support the company’s growing business, the company projects it will have a significant number of distribution centers utilizing Vocollect Voice within the next four to five years, according to Greg Johnson, senior vice president, Distribution Operations, O’Reilly Automotive, Inc.

“Our productivity and accuracy levels continue to improve throughout our distribution operations with the use of voice from Vocollect,” said Johnson. “Last year we processed over 96 million lines using Vocollect Voice. Voice has helped us to reduce cost, improve customer satisfaction and overall business performance, as well as achieve a very positive return on investment. Vocollect also will help us in our continuing efforts to transition to paperless DCs,” he said.

O’Reilly is currently using Vocollect Voice for picking in most of its existing DCs. All future new DCs will activate their operation with Vocollect, beginning with the first group of new DCs, by the end of 2010.
26 October 2009: Trespass, the privately owned sportswear leisure brand, has selected Vocollect Voice technology to be implemented by VoiteQ at its Glasgow-based distribution facility. VoiteQ’s VoiceMan middleware will interface into the Microsoft Dynamics AX Warehouse Management System (WMS), recently installed by Microsoft Gold Certified Dynamics AX specialists, Integrys Solutions. Trespass believes the new Voice solution will enable the company to increase productivity and accuracy in its warehouse, providing many significant efficiency gains and cost savings in the operation.26 October 2009: Trespass, the privately owned sportswear leisure brand, has selected Vocollect Voice technology to be implemented by VoiteQ at its Glasgow-based distribution facility. VoiteQ’s VoiceMan middleware will interface into the Microsoft Dynamics AX Warehouse Management System (WMS), recently installed by Microsoft Gold Certified Dynamics AX specialists, Integrys Solutions. Trespass believes the new Voice solution will enable the company to increase productivity and accuracy in its warehouse, providing many significant efficiency gains and cost savings in the operation.

The Voice-directed picking solution will direct Trespass’ warehouse operatives around the warehouse to pick orders for both their wholesale customers and retail outlets. The orders will be split by level in the warehouse and assigned to operatives on picking trucks over three levels of racking, each focussing on a specific area. Each will work their way around the warehouse to the various locations, picking the items required by the bar code, product code or description, as provided by the Voice direction.

The items will be placed directly into dispatch boxes, as each operative completes their tour of the warehouse they will be directed to a specific dispatch location. From here the individual boxes will go through the ‘closing’ process and the order collated. Once complete the order will be put in the dispatch area, the content and courier labels produced and the pallet build finalised prior to distribution.

Ian King, Chief Financial Officer at Trespass commented, “Having decided to relocate the company in January 2000, to the new purpose built design and distribution centre, we then undertook a major expansion of the facility in 2004, tripling our warehousing capability. This enabled us to cope with the growth of the business, but we realised we also needed to invest in the IT infrastructure to help us to work more efficiently. The first phase of this was the implementation of Microsoft AX to provide a modern, flexible, simple to use and future proof platform to help us run our business more efficiently. The next phase is the implementation of hands free Voice technology for our picking and packing operations.”

Gary Glessner, VP and managing director, Vocollect EMEA says; “Sports leisurewear is an extremely competitive market; one where stock availability and flexible pricing really count. Vocollect Voice works with the Trespass system to speed up and improve the accuracy of stock picking and packing. These improvements can be linked to reductions in operational costs and improved service to customers and opens up opportunities for competitive pricing along the supply chain.”

The VoiteQ solution, built using Vocollect Voice technology, comprises a wearable Voice computer running Vocollect’s Voice Client Voice recognition software attached to a securely fastened belt and headset worn by the employee. This enables interaction between the user and the Microsoft Dynamics AX WMS via VoiceMan middleware. Operatives can work completely hands and eyes free by receiving picking commands from the WMS, via the plug-in headset and the mobile Voice device; the system literally talks the operative through their task.

Trespass is also investing in an additional VoiceMan module to increase visibility across the operation, in order to further assess warehouse performance. VoiceMan ControlCentre provides the ability to produce live data reporting in the form of Dashboards, giving live graphical visual representation of key operational information. This will enable Trespass management to quickly and easily see a visual representation of the overall operational performance at any given time.

King concluded, “We like to choose specialists in their field, which is why we selected Integrys Solutions, as one of the UK’s leading Microsoft Dynamics AX Gold Certified Partners. We believe that their experience of integrating Microsoft solutions is well matched by VoiteQ’s experience of implementing Voice solutions. By utilising specialists we know that we will achieve a solution to help us support the company’s growth.”
